Jay-Z deal with Samsung for new album release

Jay-Z deal with Samsung for new album release

Jay-Z’s latest business deal with Android involving his upcoming album is a win for the company, the rapper and African Americans, writes Jamilah King for Colorlines. The business mogul clearly knows his audience: Young black consumers love their smartphones, and blacks are more likely than other groups to report favoring Android.

Jay-Z is teaming up with Samsung to release his new album, “Magna Carta Holy Grail”, on July 4. The new release will be free for the first one million Android users who download an app for the album. It’s a unique partnership and the first of its kind. TechHive points out that for Samsung, “It’s a chance to be associated with one of the coolest cats in pop culture and to showcase the company’s ability to compete with iTunes radio.”

Jay-Z fans should find this free download a small token of generosity. Hopefully the album shows a more matured and conscious artist.

Cali Spring Tour

Cali Spring Tour

Curtin Young: Speaking of history: In Young’s case, he learned that Dre was his father as a pre-teen, and didn’t meet his dad until he was 21. “He’s an underdog, like me, so that always sticks out,” Jelly Roll says of Young. “The underdogs, we always come out on top. This is really his passion. If it’s your passion, then you get a chance to stick out further than most because it’s in you, not just what you think you can do.”

Aside from Young and rapper Joe Moses sharing the bill, the eight-city trek is providing a platform for a select number of up-and-coming artists including Chris Ness and Aunjel Adams to perform directly in front of the industry executives and tastemakers that they may not be able to reach under different circumstances. Among the names on the guest list included longtime music manager Steve Lobel (Run DMC, Iyaz, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Eazy-E, Fat Joe, Three 6 Mafia) producer Jelly Roll (Snoop Dogg, DJ Quick, The Game, Xzibit), and Chris and Anita Pringle of independent record label, CM3.

I was invited alongside artists Chris Ness and Aunjel Adams to join the first show for the Spring Tour on March 28th, 2013 in Huntington Beach, Ca. This was a show that for sure is only going to open doors for artists looking for an avenue to show forth their talents. Stay tuned for the up & coming future events!
