Deadly 911 Calls: NYPD Kills African Immigrant Student Inside Home After Mother Calls for Ambulance

As the October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation holds protests in several cities today, we bring you the shocking story of Mohamed Bah, a 28-year-old college student from the African nation of Guinea. He was shot dead by New York City police officers on September 25, 2012. Police arrived at Mohamed Bah’s apartment after his mother, Hawa Bah, called 911 because she thought he was depressed, and wanted an ambulance to take him to the hospital. Police claimed he lunged at officers with a knife. But many questions remain unanswered. We are joined by Hawa and her attorneys, Mayo Bartlett and Randolph McLaughlin, both longtime civil rights attorneys.

A police officer in North Carolina has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for the fatal shooting of an unarmed African-American man who was apparently seeking help after crashing his car. According to police, 24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell knocked on the door of a home in Charlotte after surviving a car wreck early Saturday morning. The woman who answered called 911 when she did not recognize Ferrell. Police say they found Ferrell nearby and fired a Taser at him when he ran toward them. They say he failed to stop, so one of the officers opened fire, killing Ferrell, a former football player for Florida A&M University who had recently gotten engaged. Police initially called the encounter “appropriate and lawful,” but later said the shooting was “excessive” and that the officer “did not have a lawful right” to fire his gun. The officer, Randall Kerrick, has been released on bond after turning himself in.

Dear White Man,
You will never know how it is to be a Black Man.
A history of men labeled criminals, but you expect us to not be on guard when we come face to face with the white man who wears a badge of the law. Racism that has never seized, just has been masked with different faces.

This young man was running towards these bigots who are cowards hiding behind weapons of mass destruction. How could you, white man see this person as a threat? Who know any black man who would run towards a cop? Unless, he needed some type of help.

This is yet another story to add to the book of many names who have been taken by an enforcer of the laws which paralyze our black men everyday.

A jaded perspective that will never see the light.
