“Everything That Moves in Rafah is a Target”: Israel Continues Shelling of Gaza During Short “Pause”

Thousands of people rallied outside the White House on Saturday in protest of U.S. backing for the Israeli assault on Gaza. Some called it the largest rally for Palestinian rights ever held in the United States.
Mary Ebukhdear: “I am here to protest for my country. I want to hope to see my country free one day. I want to stop the massacre in Gaza.”
Iman Kandil: “As an American, we’re all complicit because our tax money goes to fund some of the military techniques and weapons that are being used to murder innocent civilians. So, it’s devastating, it’s infuriating, feeling a little bit frustrated with the government, and hopefully we can make a little bit of change. You know, we’ve been writing to Congress, writing to the president, writing to Secretary Kerry, trying to make that change. But I think progress is slow, but we’re hopeful.”

Over 600 Palestinians Dead as Israeli Siege

The Palestinian death toll in Gaza has topped 600 as the Israeli siege has entered its third week. Most of those killed are civilians; more than 100 are children. Israel says it has lost 27 soldiers since the ground invasion began last week. Earlier today, Israel confirmed the remains of one of its soldiers presumed to have been killed in Gaza had still not been found. Hamas has said it captured the soldier. Meanwhile, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is due to arrive in Israel to push for a ceasefire. Earlier today, Ban met in Cairo with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Egyptian officials and leaders from the Arab League. We will go to Gaza for more on the crisis after headlines.

Documentary: 5 Broken Cameras

While listening to KPFK radio this morning, the Sojourner Truth show w| Margaret Prescod
http://www.kpfk.org/index.php/programs/142-sojournertruth#.U3Yf-qzn99A

The show highlighted this documentary and played excerpts which gave light to the conflict in Palestine/Israel. I went to a conference at UCLA a couple months back to hear the experiences of an activist group who visited Palestine. The violence against the people of Palestine is heart wrenching.

They are kicked out of their own homes, killed, beaten and the U.S. government is an ally with the entity inflicting these should-be crimes, Israel. There are certain roads they may and may not drive which is enforced by different colored license plates.

Nominated for an Oscar, 5 Broken Cameras is a deeply personal first-hand account of life and nonviolent resistance in Bil’in, a West Bank village where Israel is building a security fence. Palestinian Emad Burnat, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son, shot the film and Israeli filmmaker Guy Davidi co-directed. The filmmakers follow one family’s evolution over five years, witnessing a child’s growth from a newborn baby into a young boy who observes the world unfolding around him. The film is a Palestinian-Israeli-French co-production.

A War on Campus? Northeastern University Suspends Students for Justice in Palestine Chapter

The Northeastern University chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine has become the latest student group to face reprimand for organizing around the Palestinian cause. Northeastern has suspended the group until 2015, barring it from meeting on campus and stripping it of any university funding. The move comes just weeks after student activists distributed mock eviction notices across the campus during Israeli Apartheid Week. The notices were intended to resemble those used by Israel to notify Palestinians of pending demolitions or seizures of their homes. Democranow Now speaks to Northeastern Students for Justice in Palestine member Max Geller and Ali Abunimah, co-founder of The Electronic Intifada and author of the new book, “The Battle for Justice in Palestine.” His new book includes a chapter tiled “The War on Campus.”

I WENT TO UCLA TWO WEEKS AGO TO LISTEN TO A PANEL OF ACTIVISTS, ARTISTS, PROFESSORS AND WRITERS WHO TOOK A TRIP TO PALESTINE. THEY TOLD THE STORIES OF CURRENT DAY APARTHEID, MURDER, HATE AND THE SUFFERING OF THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE AT THE HANDS OF ISRAELI CIVILIANS ALONG WITH GOVERNMENT.

IT IS AN ATROCITY THAT THERE ARE DIFFERENT COLORED LICENSE PLATES FOR ROADS WHICH ONLY ISRAELI’S MAY CROSS, THE EVICTIONS FORCED ON PALESTINIANS AND THE CRIMES AGAINST A PEOPLE WHO ONCE HAD A LARGE MASS OF LAND, NOW TAKEN FROM THEM.

THIS COUNTRY, THE UNITED STATES AIDES ISRAEL. OR GOVERNMENT IS CORRUPT AND IS THE TRUE FACE OF EVIL. THE VIOLATIONS OF MANKIND HERE ON U.S SOIL AND ABROAD GO WITH NO PUNISHMENT.

LET THE TRUTH BE KNOW, DON’T BE BLINDED BY THE LIES TOLD ON MAINSTREAM NEWS. DON’T JOIN IN THE HATRED OF OTHERS.

Open letter from Alice Walker to Alicia Keys by Alice Walker

Open letter from Alice Walker to Alicia Keys by Alice Walker

Musical artist Alicia Keys is set to perform at the Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv on the Fourth of July, in defiance of an international boycott of Israel. Below is an open letter to Keys from famed African American writer Alice Walker.

“A cultural boycott of Israel and Israeli institutions (not individuals) is the only option left to artists who cannot bear the unconscionable harm Israel inflicts every day on the people of Palestine.”

Dear Alicia Keys,

I have learned today that you are due to perform in Israel very soon. We have never met, though I believe we are mutually respectful of each other’s path and work. It would grieve me to know you are putting yourself in danger (soul danger) by performing in an apartheid country that is being boycotted by many global conscious artists. You were not born when we, your elders who love you, boycotted institutions in the US South to end an American apartheid less lethal than Israel’s against the Palestinian people. Google Montgomery Bus Boycott, if you don’t know about this civil rights history already. We changed our country fundamentally, and the various boycotts of Israeli institutions and products will do the same there. It is our only nonviolent option and, as we learned from our own struggle in America, nonviolence is the only path to a peaceful future.

If you go to my website and blog alicewalkersgarden.com you can quickly find many articles I have written over the years that explain why a cultural boycott of Israel and Israeli institutions (not individuals) is the only option left to artists who cannot bear the unconscionable harm Israel inflicts every day on the people of Palestine, whose major “crime” is that they exist in their own land, land that Israel wants to control as its own. Under a campaign named “Brand Israel,” Israeli officials have stated specifically their intent to downplay the Palestinian conflict by using culture and arts to showcase Israel as a modern, welcoming place.

This is actually a wonderful opportunity for you to learn about something sorrowful, and amazing: that our government (Obama in particular) supports a system that is cruel, unjust, and unbelievably evil. You can spend months, and years, as I have, pondering this situation. Layer upon layer of lies, misinformation, fear, cowardice and complicity. Greed. It is a vast eye-opener into the causes of much of the affliction in our suffering world.

I have kept you in my awareness as someone of conscience and caring, especially about the children of the world. Please, if you can manage it, go to visit the children in Gaza, and sing to them of our mutual love of all children, and of their right not to be harmed simply because they exist.

With love, younger sister, beloved daughter and friend,
Alice Walker
