Martin Luther King Jr. Day – A Tribute

DemocracyNow shows a speech heard by few.

The United States government murdered him, but his legacy will never be forgotten along with all the other Black names unspoken in the struggles of racist oppression. Civil rights has been a never ending fight for laws that still hold Blacks in shackles.

R.I.P. to one of great ones.

Kerry Washington – Sojourner Truth

Born in New York circa 1797, Sojourner Truth was the self-given name, from 1843 onward, of Isabella Baumfree, an African-American abolitionist and women’s rights activist. Truth was born into slavery in Swartekill, New York, but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. Her best-known speech on racial inequalities, “Ain’t I a Woman?”, was delivered extemporaneously in 1851 at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention.

Arizona Cardinals Patrick Peterson Becomes The Highest Paid Corner back In The League

After reports were release back in May that the Seattle Seahawks player Richard Sherman had become the highest paid cornerback in the league with a new 4 year contract extension worth $65 million, Cleveland Brown’s Joe Haden quickly stole the shine a week later by announcing his 5 year contract extension which was worth $68 million. While Haden was able to hold onto that title for the past 2 ½ months, he will now be one upped by fellow NFL corner back Patrick Peterson.

After negotiating since February, last night the Arizona Cardinals released a statement announcing a contract extension with Patrick Peterson. Although the team’s announcement did not specify the pay, Peterson followed up via Twitter with a statement of his own stating that the deal is worth $70 million, with $48 million guaranteed-making Peterson the highest paid cornerback in the NFL. The 5 year contract extension will end in 2020. Patrick originally signed a 4 year contract with undisclosed terms back in 2011 after being selected 5th overall in the draft pick. It was reported this morning that Peterson received a $15.3 million signing bonus.

Candles are seen at the memorial of Garner in Staten Island

The funeral was held in New York City for Eric Garner, an African-American father of six who died after police placed him in a chokehold. Police say they confronted Garner because he was selling bootleg cigarettes. Graphic video of the incident shows an officer pulling Garner to the ground by the neck and then holding his head against the pavement. As other officers crowd on top of Garner, he repeatedly says, “I can’t breathe.” Garner soon stops moving. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital. On Wednesday, Bishop Kareem Evans addressed mourners at Brooklyn’s Bethel Baptist Church.

“This is an awesome task because Brother Eric is not only a friend, but he is family. Not only is he family, but he is one that you consider close family.”

The officer who used the chokehold, Daniel Pantaleo, has been moved to desk duty and ordered to turn in his badge and gun pending investigations. Three men have sued Pantaleo in the past two years for unlawful, racially motivated arrests. The New York City Police Department says it also plans to overhaul training procedures in the wake of Garner’s death. Four emergency response workers who were at the scene have been suspended without pay.
