Shabana Basij-Rasikh: Dare to educate Afghan girls

While listening to Feminist Magazine on http://www.kpfk.org they aired the story of this extraordinary woman.

Imagine a country where girls must sneak out to go to school, with deadly consequences if they get caught learning. This was Afghanistan under the Taliban, and traces of that danger remain today. 22-year-old Shabana Basij-Rasikh runs a school for girls in Afghanistan. She celebrates the power of a family’s decision to believe in their daughters — and tells the story of one brave father who stood up to local threats.

Forbes 5 Richest Hip Hop Artists in the World

Forbes 5 Richest Hip Hop Artists in the World

Sean “Diddy” Combs: Diddy sits at the top of the table. His net worth is estimated to be somewhere around $700 million. Over a period of just one year, Diddy has managed to add a whopping $120 million to his coffers.

This surge in income comes mainly from the acquisition of Revolt TV, his new music channel of which he is a majority shareholder, and his sharp business acumen.

Dr. Dre: Coming in second place, Dr. Dre is estimated to be worth $550 million. Dre pocketed much of his money this year because of a large stake in Beats By Dr. Dre, which he helped found in 2008 with Interscope chief Jimmy Iovine.

Beats By Dr. Dre is at present the manufacturer of premium headphones and garners two-thirds of the global market.

Jay Z: He was in second place and has slipped down one spot. Jay Z has $520 million to his name, which isn’t half bad. It shouldn’t be forgotten that he is married to one of the richest singers ever, Beyoncé. If their net worth were to be combined, they’d be at the top of the richest most-anything couples list.

At present, most of his money comes from Roc Nation, his record label and management firm which recently acquired a sports agency.

Bryan “Birdman” Williams: His net worth is over $300 million. But, he has to share his fortune with his brother, Ronald “Slim” Williams. They cofounded Cash Money Records 20 years ago and it continues to grow with a clientele list that includes Nicki Minaj, Drake and Lil’ Wayne.

50 Cent: The bad boy of rap has a comparatively meager $100 million to his name. Most of his money came from the sale of a Vitamin water company in 2007. He has been trying to repeat that deal with companies like SMS and SK Energy beverages.

He also has plans to restart his music career by reclaiming full ownership of his G-Unit Records company and releasing a new album, “Animal Ambition” which is due to drop in June.

http://financialjuneteenth.com lessons from this story:

1) Most hip-hop artists become wealthy by exporting black culture to the white community. This is a controversial practice that can sometimes lead to the bastardization of black culture into something that it was never intended to be. So, the success of men who are able to exploit this opportunity should be taken with a grain of salt.

2) These men show that most of the money earned in the entertainment industry is earned on the business end. Performing might be how they opened the door, but it was the leveraging of their brands with corporate partners that got them over the top.

3) Be careful about encouraging young black men to try to emulate the success of these moguls. For every black male who succeeds at this level, there are a thousand others who only found economic ruin. Also, many of them have ingested many of the most problematic aspects of commercialized hip-hop culture, which might include excessive use of drugs and alcohol or a lifestyle leading to criminal behavior. It’s still debatable whether these men are getting rich by giving something good to the African American community.

Scholarships Info App

Scholarships Info App

21 year old Christopher Gray, a Drexel University junior and CEO/Founder of Scholly, has found a way to make finding those scholarships easier.

Gray himself has been very successful in finding scholarship funds. He is known as the “Million-Dollar Scholar” after being awarded $1.3 million in scholarships.

Over the past three years, Gray has also helped other families manually scour through databases, and figured, “Hey, I need something that can help. There has to be a faster way.”

Gray developed the answer in the form of Scholly, an app that uses eight specific parameters, like state, GPA, or race, to instantly filter through a deep directory of scholarships available for the prospective student.

“It’s extremely simple,” says Gray and that ultimately was the goal.

I am glad to see the creation of such an app by a young black man. This is the type of people our children should look up to. We need more light shed on positive black figures.

Darren Rainey – Another Black Man Killed by Racist Pigs

Darren Rainey - Another Black Man Killed by Racist Pigs

Source: http://www.policestateusa.com/2014/darren-rainey/

The mentally-ill prisoner at the Dade Correctional Institution was forced him to stand in a tiny shower stall while being blasted by scalding hot water until his skin began to shrivel away from his body after he defecated in his cell. Fellow inmates say he begged for his life before collapsing in the shower.

“I can’t take it no more, I’m sorry. I won’t do it again,’’ he screamed over and over, according to a grievance complaint from a fellow inmate.

The Florida’s Department of Corrections often comes up with cruel and imaginative punishments for prisoners — allegedly ranging from starvation diets to forcing prisoners to fight so the guards could place bets.

The Miami Herald reports that it was DOC Officer Roland Clarke who was on video placing Rainey in the shower at 7:38pm on June 23, 2012. Conveniently, the camera outside the shower “malfunctioned” right after Rainey was forced in. He was found dead at 9:30pm.

The facility then did its best to cover up the death. Sources say that it was alleged that Rainey had a heart attack, yet DOC refused to perform an autopsy. The official cause of death has never been announced. No one has been charged with the death of Darren Rainey.

“Two years is a very long time to wait to find out why your brother was found dead in a shower,” said Rainey’s brother, Andre Chapman.

This is the exact reason why even I as a BLACK WOMAN do not feel protected by these officers of the law. They are a majority of men and women (mostly men though) who get high off the power they are given over people lives. All it takes is 6 months (depending on what state you live in) to complete police training and you can be in charge of people lives.

CA police officers are some of the highest paid in the country. In the SF Bay Area police officers and Deputy Sheriff’s can easily earn $100,000 or more per year. Many departmental starting salaries in the SF Bay Area are $30-38 per hour. Other parts of the country pay significantly less, however their costs of living are also much less. The median expected salary for a typical Police Patrol Officer in the United States is $45,780.00

So officers are being paid quite well for such little training and the ability to practice racism, sexism, to torture and get away with murder as in this case. This country was built on racism and the hatred the white man (yes, I said the white man) holds against those who aren’t the same skin color will never cease unfortunately.

Student Loan Debt $1.2 Trillion

Student Loan Debt $1.2 Trillion

Americans now owe more money on student loans than credit cards. Obama’s executive order will cap loan payments for millions of people at 10 percent of monthly income – a so-called “Pay As You Earn” model.

President Obama: “So we’re announcing steps that will open up “Pay As You Earn” to nearly 5 million more Americans. That’s the first action we’re taking today. The second action is to renegotiate contracts with private companies like Sallie Mae that service our student loans. And we’re going to make it clear that these companies are in the business of helping students, not just collecting payments, and they owe young people the customer service, and support, and financial flexibility that they deserve.”

Such a hard choice to either go to college and take on a debt you will more than likely be paying back for the rest of your life, or take a chance and go straight into the work force – hopefully to climb the ladder of success.

College is not for everyone, I chose not to go but my sister did. She has completed a bachelor’s degree with one year completed of a master’s program at USC and she is already in debt around $60,000.00
I did not want that debt, but for those who want a higher education via a degree have the hard choice of going into debt at the cost of what should be free to them.

Instead of our government making education free – paid by tax dollars. The education system is a privatized money making machine. Instead of giving breaks to student, the United States government gives tax breaks to major corporations.

How backwards and how dumb is this government? – If you have a society of educated working people, the taxes they pay into helps the economy – not break it.

Belief of Witchcraft in Africa

I found this video and article http://saveafricaswitches.wordpress.com/witchcraft-in-africa/
show the belief of witchcraft and it’s origins.
Local beliefs and theories about witchcraft may be influenced by ideologies that are brought in by various religious groups. Problems that are common to humanity may be attributed to demons, witches or Satan. The belief in these concepts is not necessarily a predecessor to abuse or violence.
It is the destructive behavior resulting from these beliefs that can be dangerous.

Via @
http://education.nationalgeographic.com/education/news/witch-trials-21st-century/?ar_a=1
The most famous witch trial in history happened in Salem, Massachusetts, during the winter and spring of 1692-1693. When it was all over, 141 suspects, both men and women, were tried as witches. Nineteen were executed by hanging. One was pressed to death by heavy stones.

Belief in witchcraft is widespread. A 2005 poll of Canadians and people from the United Kingdom found that 13 percent believed in witches. For Americans, that number was even higher: 21 percent.

Accusations of witchcraft can be associated with good luck as well as bad luck. Nigeria’s oil boom, which began in the 1970s, has made a few of its citizens extremely wealthy. Some Nigerians explain this rapid accumulation of money and power as a sign of witchcraft. As recently as 2007, children accused of witchcraft in Nigeria were burned, poisoned, and abused.

In India, landowning women are sometimes accused of witchcraft. Neighbors of the suspected witch may begin collecting firewood on which the suspect will burn. The women, often older widows, are scared enough to leave their homes. Their neighbors then take their land.

So this is not just a belief rooted in African heritage. I am sad to see such atrocities are happening to this day. If someone is accused of doing wrong, there should be a process of trial through courts, not people being burned alive/tortured for things that cannot be proved as a matter of fact.

I believe in natural medicine, the healing of spirituality but not of killing people because one things a bad curse has been put on them.

TLC has something to say about Rihanna

TLC has something to say about Rihanna

The might I say beautiful dress Rihanna wore to the CFDA Award has caused positive and negative views.

In an interview w|Sunrise Australia T-Boz it was said:
“Every time I see you, you don’t have to be naked,” says T-Boz. “It’s hard for us to say anything because any time we do, they say, ‘Oh TLC must be jealous’, but I call a spade a spade. We became the biggest girl selling group of all time with our clothes on and that says a lot. It’s easy to sell sex. We could go around too with booby cakes [breasts] out all day long,’

I am caught in between. I feel a woman should be able to express herself and show off her assets. But, there is a certain way to do it tastefully. I’m not going to lie, I LOVE Rihanna and her I don’t give a fck what people think attitude!

But, TLC has a point of gaining a successful career and faithful fans without being naked. At the same time, if we are not free to express ourselves however we feel comfortable, being women who at one point of time could not do so, what progress has there been in society?

Rihanna has a kick ass body, has plenty of videos/images of her fully clothed, makes good music and I say show it off before it’s gone.

5 Years After Dr. George Tiller’s Murder, A Doctor Braves Threats to Continue Abortions in Wichita

Via > http://www.democracynow.org/2014/6/4/5_years_after_dr_george_tiller

As Oklahoma enacts a law that could close all but one abortion clinic in the state — and Louisiana is poised to follow suit — DemocracyNow takes a look at the legacy of Dr. George Tiller, who was assassinated five years ago this past weekend. Tiller was one of a handful of doctors providing abortions in the third trimester of pregnancy. He braved constant threats, a firebombing at his clinic and an assassination attempt that left him with gunshot wounds to both arms. On May 31, 2009, anti-choice extremist, Scott Roeder, entered Tiller’s church in Wichita, Kansas, and shot him dead. We remember Tiller by speaking with Dr. Cheryl Chastine, who travels from Chicago to Wichita each week to provide abortions at Tiller’s former clinic, which reopened last year. Chastine discusses the obstacles to abortion access in Kansas and responds to the threats and harassment she and her colleagues face. “I get up in the morning and there are patients that need me,” Chastine says. “If I allow myself to be deterred from doing this work, then I am allowing a victory for terrorism.”

This country’s religious extremists are on a mission to reverse the rights women won and should be undoubtedly given the rights over our own bodies. Abortion is a choice only a woman should make, not a man, not the government, not a state.

The U.S. government and it’s statesmen have a history rooted in racism, sexism and classism. Charged with the fuel of power and control over people, we are desperately in need of government which has a people who actually think consciously and righteously.
