Givenchy names Erykah Badu Newest Face for Spring 2014 Campaign

Givenchy names Erykah Badu Newest Face for Spring 2014 Campaign

According to Style.com, who broke the story, Tisci had known Badu slightly but had never worked with her. Still, he said, he’d had her image in the back of his mind when he was designing the Spring 2014 collection, a mash-up of African and Japanese influences.

He spoke of her eccentric style, saying:

“She’s one of the most stylish women I’ve met in my life. She’s got such a good sense of proportion, of colors. Erykah, she’s an icon—come on! What I want to do with my advertising campaign is spread the love. Already now it’s been three seasons that I’ve been using people that express something—they are great artists, or beautiful women, or stylish women, or models that I really believe in. It’s kind of a family portfolio.”

Glad to see a afro-centric black face such as Erykah who speaks volumes of her consciousness and I don’t give a fck what other people may think attitude to grace this lines 2014 campaign.

Now, we just need to get over the hump of high fashion being only tall and skinny models.

The Secret History of How Cuba Helped End Apartheid in South Africa

http://www.democracynow.org – As the world focuses on Tuesday’s historic handshake between President Obama and Cuban President Raúl Castro, a look back at the pivotal role Cuba played in ending apartheid and why Castro was one of only five world leaders invited to speak at Nelson Mandela’s memorial. In the words of Mandela, the Cuban “destroyed the myth of the invincibility of the white oppressor … [and] inspired the fighting masses of South Africa.” Historian Piero Gleijeses argues that it was Cuba’s victory in Angola in 1988 that forced Pretoria to set Namibia free and helped break the back of apartheid South Africa. Democracynow speaks to Gleijeses about his new book, “Visions of Freedom: Havana, Washington, Pretoria, and the Struggle for Southern Africa, 1976-1991,” and play archival footage of Mandela meeting Fidel Castro in Cuba.

Polaroid & Apartheid: Inside the Beginnings of the Boycott, Divestment Movement Against South Africa

A look back at how African-American workers at Polaroid in Massachusetts helped launch the divestment movement against apartheid South Africa in the early 1970s. We speak to Caroline Hunter, co-founder of the Polaroid Workers Revolutionary Movement, who stumbled upon evidence that her employer was providing the camera system to the South African state to produce photographs for the infamous passbooks for black residents. Hunter and her late husband, Ken Williams, then launched a boycott of the company. The boycott and divestment campaign ultimately grew to target other corporations in apartheid South Africa, including General Motors and Barclays Bank, among others. By 1977, Polaroid finally withdrew from South Africa.
