Albino Models Making Their Mark

Albino Models Making Their Mark

Finally the fashion world is discovering what we have known for ages that-Beauty is found in all shapes, sizes and colors. It also can be colorless, which is the point being proven and celebrated through a wave of models with albinism — a condition affecting melanin production that results in little or no pigmentation in the skin, hair and eyes.

Models like Thando Hopa, 23, Stephen Thompson and Refilwe Modiselle, 27 are just a few albino models making their names known in the fashion world. Fellow fair-skinned models Shaun Ross and Diandra Forrest have also found success gracing the catwalks and striking a pose for the world’s top design houses.

However, the idea of colorless beauty hasn’t been embraced — especially not in Africa. In many countries within the continent, individuals born with albinism endure persecution and prejudice, and some are even hunted by witch doctors as they believe that albinos have mystical or disease curing powers.

The South African model Thando Hopa is attempting to change that. Hopa who has been deemed “the new face of fashion” and “fashion’s new colour.”

[“I now realize that I have a platform to inspire young girls, and as someone who never had a role model who looked like me when I was growing up, I now hope to be able to show that albinism can be beautiful and is just another kind of normal,” says Hopa.] We think they are Beautiful, simply beautiful!

Brittney Griner Lands Nike Contract to Model Mens Wear

Brittney Griner Lands Nike Contract to Model Mens Wear

Brittney Griner caught the attention of the masses when she was a college basketball at Baylor University. Currently she is a player with the Phoenix Mercury of the Women’s National Basketball Association and now she is joining another team: Nike’s.

Brittney has been tapped to model for the sports brand. She will become the first openly gay athlete to sign with Nike.

But the excitement doesn’t stop there, the 6’8″ Brittney won’t be styling in sports bras, she’ll be modeling men’s apparel. The contract supposedly reflects Griner’s more androgynous clothing style and according to ESPN, the style is being picked up by more and more major sports companies, so naturally Nike wanted to be the first to tap the niche market.

I love this! Why should a woman who feels comfortable in so-called men’s clothes have to wear anything else but that. Society has accepted lesbians, gays, trans-sexual people to a certain extent and it is time to open all doors and minds when it comes to human’s. We are bleed red, we all love, we all breath the same air and want to be accepted, whether its from society or our own family.

So much hatred comes from closed minds and the wrongs things being taught. Change is definitely needed across the lands for a better world.

But, on a bigger and worldwide issue is:
Nike’s Indonesia contractors are accused of horrific labor practices that range from vicious name-calling to physical injury, running sweatshops that would be illegal back in the bucolic burg of Beaverton, Oregon, where Nike has its corporate HQ.

According to the AP report, the 10,000 workers in the Taiwanese-managed plant are mostly women who earn 50 cents an hour. “They throw shoes and other things at us. They growl and slap us when they get angry. It’s part of our daily bread,” said a 23 year-old worker from the embroidery division.

Good News: Black Women Enroll In College More Than Any Race And Gender

Good News: Black Women Enroll In College More Than Any Race And Gender

For the first time since the US Census has collected data around educational attainment and enrollment, in 2011 African-American women’s enrollment in colleges has hit a record high. According to the analysis of the most recent census data, nearly 1 in 10 of every African-American females are enrolled in colleges and universities, suggesting the prohibitive barriers to entry typically associated with women and minorities may be finally eroding in post-secondary settings.

The “enrollment status of the population”— an annual report from the US Census Bureau’s CPS (current population survey) estimates the percentage of a groups educational attainment by age, s*x and racial categories—hit a record 9.7 percent in 2011 for Black Alone and Female metrics, according to the report. This represents a 31 percent increase from 2000 reporting of 7.4 percent.

The average percentage enrollment for the U.S. population is 6.9 percent (6.3 percent for males, 7.5 percent for females.)

The college enrollment rate is one measure of a country, group and individual competitiveness. The rising enrollment rate over the past decade suggests that while factors as the economic downturn, and unemployment and underemployment rates for college graduates remains high 52 percent (Andrew Sum: The Nation’s underemployed in the “Great Recession” of 2007–09,) increasing tuition costs and long-term student debt, most Americans still perceive college attendance as a value-added proposition to becoming competitive . The report shows enrollment for all groups increased 18.9 percent from 2000 to 2011.

African-American Women

The percentage difference between African-American Women and the next closest group is striking and now marks the first time this group (or any other group) has surpassed Asian Males. Black Female College Enrollment at 9.7 percent is a full percentage point above the next group which represents an 11.5 percent enrollment rate above Asian Females. This statistic is equally impressive in that in one year, Black Females and Asian Females surpassed Asian Males as the leading group in College enrollment (U.S. Census Bureau, Current Population Survey: October 2010.)

Beyonce Charges Fans $25,000 to Work for Her for “Free”

beyonceIf you love Beyonce enough to put up this kind of money, then I think you should give serious thought to doing something like this.
Beyonce and her mother Tina have came up with a fascinating idea: Pay them $25,000 and you’ll get the chance to work for them, without pay, for one day only.

The singer is auctioning off this stunning opportunity through a company called The money isn’t going into her own pockets, and is instead going to charity.

The package includes a meet-and-greet with Beyonce; two VIP tickets to her Los Angeles show; a chance to spend the day working with Beyonce’s mother Tina in the wardrobe department and a Mrs. Carter Show World Tour “gift bag,” according to The Huffington Post.

The auction has, thus far, received 10 bids, with the highest being $11,500.00 > Are these people serious?
So, even though their are fans are willing to pay money to be close to Tina and Beyonce, there are also those who criticize the ladies for appearing to exploit fan loyalty in such a seemingly blatant way.

“Disgusting! Beyonce is rich, she should just make the $25,000 donation herself rather than asking her fans to do it! #rip-off,” tweeted one person.

“Does Beyonce think that she’s that important that ppl will PAY $25,000 to work 4 her 4 free? That is theft in my opinion. Not worth it!” tweeted another follower.

“So let me get this straight. You have to pay Beyonce $25,000 to work FOR her for free? LOL! Get over yourself, her ego is out of this world!” tweeted another follower.

Rather than offering people the chance to work for her for a fee, she probably should have sold the chance to meet with she and her mother to a rich donor who also wanted to do some good. This might be turning into a PR nightmare for Beyonce and her camp, since the story has gone viral on the Internet.

Beyonce and Tina have put together the Miss A Meal campaign, along with her sister Solange and singers Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. The campaign encourages people to miss a meal and donate the proceeds to charity.

“When we say ‘we are starving,’ we have to remember that there are people who are literally starving,” Tina said in a press release. “If everyone fed one person, one meal, we could make a huge difference.

My opinion is that if all the wealthy people in the world, such as Beyoncé, would donate a 3rd of their wealth to the starving people of this corrupt world, things may be a little better. If people like Beyoncé employed people with wages to fit the cost of living, we would have a better economy.

The problem with this world is the greedy, un-thoughtful, right-winged piranha’s of this world. The corporate elitist and other wealthy people have an agenda that does not include humanitarianism.

I just went off on a tangent!!!! I like Beyoncé as an artist and would expect better out of her, especially as being a black woman. She needs more schooling on her African heritage (since she feels the need to lighten her skin & change her black nose). Beyoncé > get real & open your heart.

Open letter from Alice Walker to Alicia Keys by Alice Walker

Open letter from Alice Walker to Alicia Keys by Alice Walker

Musical artist Alicia Keys is set to perform at the Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv on the Fourth of July, in defiance of an international boycott of Israel. Below is an open letter to Keys from famed African American writer Alice Walker.

“A cultural boycott of Israel and Israeli institutions (not individuals) is the only option left to artists who cannot bear the unconscionable harm Israel inflicts every day on the people of Palestine.”

Dear Alicia Keys,

I have learned today that you are due to perform in Israel very soon. We have never met, though I believe we are mutually respectful of each other’s path and work. It would grieve me to know you are putting yourself in danger (soul danger) by performing in an apartheid country that is being boycotted by many global conscious artists. You were not born when we, your elders who love you, boycotted institutions in the US South to end an American apartheid less lethal than Israel’s against the Palestinian people. Google Montgomery Bus Boycott, if you don’t know about this civil rights history already. We changed our country fundamentally, and the various boycotts of Israeli institutions and products will do the same there. It is our only nonviolent option and, as we learned from our own struggle in America, nonviolence is the only path to a peaceful future.

If you go to my website and blog you can quickly find many articles I have written over the years that explain why a cultural boycott of Israel and Israeli institutions (not individuals) is the only option left to artists who cannot bear the unconscionable harm Israel inflicts every day on the people of Palestine, whose major “crime” is that they exist in their own land, land that Israel wants to control as its own. Under a campaign named “Brand Israel,” Israeli officials have stated specifically their intent to downplay the Palestinian conflict by using culture and arts to showcase Israel as a modern, welcoming place.

This is actually a wonderful opportunity for you to learn about something sorrowful, and amazing: that our government (Obama in particular) supports a system that is cruel, unjust, and unbelievably evil. You can spend months, and years, as I have, pondering this situation. Layer upon layer of lies, misinformation, fear, cowardice and complicity. Greed. It is a vast eye-opener into the causes of much of the affliction in our suffering world.

I have kept you in my awareness as someone of conscience and caring, especially about the children of the world. Please, if you can manage it, go to visit the children in Gaza, and sing to them of our mutual love of all children, and of their right not to be harmed simply because they exist.

With love, younger sister, beloved daughter and friend,
Alice Walker

Judge Orders Google to Disclose User Info to FBI

Judge Orders Google to Disclose User Info to FBI

A federal judge has ordered the Internet giant Google to hand over customer data sought by the FBI. In a ruling disclosed Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston said Google must comply with the so-called national security letters granting the government access to users’ private info without court warrants. Judge Illston’s latest ruling appears to contradict her decision earlier this year ordering the government to stop issuing the letters. A group that has challenged the letters in court, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said: “We are disappointed that the same judge who declared these letters unconstitutional is now requiring compliance with them.”
